Salah's Dramatic Strike Sends Egypt into AFCON 2025 Quarterfinals
Record seven-time champions Egypt advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Benin in extra time during their Round of 16 clash at the Grand Stade d'Agadir on January 5.The Pharaohs, captained by Mohamed Salah, were made to work for their progression against a resilient Benin side that pushed the match beyond regulation time. After a goalless first half, Egypt broke the deadlock in the 70th minute through midfielder Marwan Attia, who unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.

Benin responded strongly, equalizing in the 83rd minute when Jodel Dossou capitalized on a loose ball to slot home and force extra time. The North Africans regained the lead early in the additional period, with defender Yasser Ibrahim heading in from a corner in the 97th minute.

With Benin pressing for another equalizer, Egypt sealed the win on a counterattack in the dying moments. Salah broke clear, calmly lifting the ball over advancing goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou for his third goal of the tournament – his 10th overall in AFCON history.

The result marks Egypt's first knockout advancement since 2022 and keeps alive their pursuit of an eighth continental title. They will remain in Agadir for the quarterfinal on January 10, facing either defending champions Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso.

Benin's campaign ends at the Round of 16, equaling their best-ever finish from 2019.
