Sturridge: "Wirtz's Recent Performances Have Been Flawless; His Passing is Impeccable

Sturridge:
January 2 – Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, in an interview with Sky Sports, shared his views on Reds midfielder Florian Wirtz.

Sturridge said: "Wirtz’s performances over the past few weeks have been flawless. His confidence has clearly grown; he’s always popping up in the right areas to receive the ball, and he’s now operating in a familiar zone."

"I think this has given him more freedom on the pitch. When you play as a No. 10, with your back to goal and under pressure from all sides, it’s never easy to perform in a new, high-intensity league."

"In my opinion, moving Wirtz to the left has given him a more liberated role. He can receive the ball sideways, shift his weight to beat defenders, and drift into dangerous areas – that’s what I admire about him. Some of his interplay in the final third has been exemplary, and the passes he’s delivering to the forwards are simply impeccable."

Sturridge also commented on the officiating in Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Leeds United: "As for the penalty incident involving Ekitike in this match – whether it should have been given or not is debatable, but opponent defender Bjørn was certainly pulling him for a period."

"Konaté’s timing and pass for the run were exquisite. You see Ekitike using his physical strength to shake off the defender, and you fully expect Wirtz to step up and tuck the chance away."
